CHAPTER 1:

Preparing For The Night Before a Photoshoot

It is essential to plan ahead of time. If you've forgotten something or aren't feeling 100 percent, you won't be confident on your shoot day.

And believe us when we say it shows in the modeling photos.

It’s hard to know how to prepare for a photoshoot, especially if you're new to modeling or just starting out, not to mention the added pressure of meeting new people and making a good first impression as a model.

Even with full services provided (e.g. makeup, hair, wardrobe styling, photographers), there are things you can acquire and bring to ensure you produce the best pictures possible.

The more you prepare, the better your first impression.

Where do you start?

Rule of thumb for any model in the industry - do what you can to help the photoshoot run smoothly.

Starting with the basics.

What simple things can you do as a model and what should you be doing?

Two things:

Eat healthily and get a good night’s sleep.

Another thing that a model can do is prep everything the night before to avoid any last-minute delays.

Here are some tips to remember to get you started on the right track!

CHAPTER 2:

What You Need To Do

Grooming and Diet

  • Hair should be removed from the underarms and legs.
If you're going to be in swimwear or underwear, please don't forget your bikini line!
  • Waxing the day before the shoot is not recommended because it might cause the skin to be irritated, red, or rashy
  • Exfoliate and moisturize your entire body.
  • Wash your hair the day before the shoot, not the day of.
Unless you have really thin, greasy hair. The second-day-washed hair is easier to style!
  • If you are going to use a self-tanner, use it after you shave and exfoliate.
Otherwise, it will be scrubbed off.
Try to do this in the morning the day before the shoot so that any mistakes are visible by nightfall

TIP → This should not be your first time using a product, only use self-tanner the day before a shoot if you are experienced with it and know it will look natural

  • Skip the alcoholic drinks.
Alcohol makes your face puffy and causes bags or wrinkles under your eyes - and you don’t want that.

Clothes and Props

  • Remove any watches, rings, or any other jewelry that may leave marks or imprints on your skin
  • Lay out your outfits next to your bag. This should include any shoes and accessories that are to be worn or brought
  • Check that everything is clean and ironed!

The Final Steps

  • Fully charge your phone
  • Make sure you have the right contact information for everyone on the shoot saved on your phone
  • Double/triple check you have the correct address (Bali addresses and maps aren't always correct!)
  • Try not to schedule any activities for this day (there is always a possibility for over-time) - relax, take it easy
  • Pack your model bag
  • Confirm the meeting time and leave early. In Bali traffic is bad, this is common knowledge so, always leave early
  • Pack all of your wardrobe (with shoes, accessories, and props) and model kit and arrive on time

TIP → It's so important to be punctual, especially for outdoor shoots. Make this a priority!

  • Get plenty of sleep!

Before you spruce yourself up for the big day, make sure you keep the enthusiasm alive during this planning phase. Put on your favorite songs and get the blood pumping.

CHAPTER 3:

Day of The Shoot

So it's the big day! How exciting - you have done everything of the above. You are feeling fresh as a daisy and ready to smash your shoot!

  • If the shoot is very early (sunrise), get plenty of rest the night before
  • Splash cold water on your face after showering. This eliminates the tired look, that everyone has when they first wake up
  • Shower and apply antiperspirant/deodorant
  • Do not wear perfume, it can stain clothes
  • You’ll need energy. Eat a light meal 2-3 hours before the shoot. Sip some water for hydration
  • Make sure you are relaxed.

TIP → We recommend doing yoga or meditation on the day of the shoot to get rid of jitters. If you practice this routinely it can be extremely effective

CHAPTER 4:

What To Wear On Your Way To The Photo Shoot

  • Wear sunscreen for outdoor shoots, you don't want to burn your beautiful skin. Photoshoots can last for hours!
  • Do not wear a ponytail to the shoot, it leaves a kink in the hair

Tip → Style your hair and leave it down or wrap it in a loose style that you can let down when you arrive (a loose bun secured with pins can give the hair body and a nice wave)

  • Wear a button-up shirt so you don't mess up your hair taking it off when you arrive and get into the wardrobe
  • Wear sweatpants and loose sneakers, or flip-flops. You'll look like hell when you arrive but you won't have any marks on your skin during the shoot - isn't that what's important?
  • Do not wear a bra or underwear that will leave marks on your skin.

CHAPTER 5:

Model Bag

As a model, you must always be prepared when you are on a booking or have a day of castings ahead of you.

Your “Model Bag” is a vital part of being prepared, and should contain everything you may need for a show or a shoot.

So, What Needs To Go In This Magic Model Bag We Speak Of?

Be sure to always ask your agent if the client has any specific wardrobe or shoe requirements for you to bring.

A few things will vary depending on the job at hand (example: they may ask you to bring some heels or black jeans).

But there are staples that you want to make sure you always have available regardless of the job.

Here are the items you need to have in your model bag!

  • Underwear: 1 nude & 1 black strapless/seamless bra and g-string set
  • Basic Makeup kit for touch-ups and make sure you have a pair of tweezers
  • Makeup remover
  • Wipes are also good for hygiene purposes along with deodorant

  • Nail polish remover JUST in case
  • Sanitary items for women
  • Scarf to put over your head when changing clothes so you don't get make-up on the clothing items
  • A (straw for lipstick - not a necessity, but good to have when you want to drink water when your makeup is done
  • Sunblock
  • Breath mints. Bring your dental kit: floss and brush your teeth (with toothpaste!) after lunch!

CHAPTER 6:

The End (Kind Of)

Anything you can do to be ready before your scheduled time will leave you feeling prepared, confident, and ready for some serious badass posing and creating fabulous content.

Modeling is a gratifying, confidence-building career that not many are privileged enough to experience.

Being prepared means that you, your photographer, and any other member of your team who is on the shoot is having a great time.

The best photographs are the result of planning, collaboration, and attention to detail.

You’ll continue to improve in how to prepare for a photoshoot, and as always, serve your best looks.
